Protecting the Shore: Lighthouses & Their Stories

From Alexandria to Muckle Flugga

Lecturer: Barry A. Greenlaw

Originating in ancient Egypt, lighthouses reached the peak of their usefulness in the 18th and 19th century, before modern technological developments marked their practical demise in the past century and a half. Today most of the almost 20,000 lighthouses that survive around the world are viewed mainly as romantic unmanned reminders of the past, though many still flash their familiar cadence to guide and warn of dangers still present in these far safer times.

The prime emphasis in this course will be on the lighthouses of Europe and America – notably their design, building and history. Tentative topics will include Lighthouses of England (including the famous Eddystone Light), Scotland, and several sessions on North American lights from Canada, Maine, the East and West Coasts of the U.S. and the Great Lakes. We will also bring into the presentations a number of associated topics: the construction of related coastal defenses, shipwrecks, and particularly developments in navigation and other technologies, which eventually led to the redundancy of the lighthouses themselves.

Protecting the Shore – Lighthouses & Their Stories is a 10-week course to be presented at St. Martin’s Activity Center from February 14-15 through April 25-26, 2019 (there will be a one-week break with no class on March 7-8). The course will be presented three times each week – on Thursday & Friday mornings (9:30-11:30 a.m.) and Thursday evenings (6:30-8:30 p.m.).

The fee for the course is $200 (you may, if you wish, register for either half of the course: Sessions 1-5, or 6-10, for $125 either half).
