The Earls of Britain

Their Families, Their History, Their Houses

Lecturer: Barry A. Greenlaw

In the English Peerage, the title of Earl is third in rank (after Duke and Marquess) – but in historical terms it is the oldest and most important. The name is derived from an old Norse and Anglo-Saxon term for a powerful governing individual, often second in power only to the King himself. From the reign of Richard II, the title was generally hereditary as well.

Today there are almost 200 active titled Earls and 4 Countesses (an Earl’s Consort) and we will consider a number of these Earldoms in this course. We will also take into consideration several of the earlier powerful and often, infamous figures of the past whose title reflected their status and authority in the long, colorful history of Britain.

A principal part of this course will be the inclusion and discussion of a number of significant and often little-known Country Houses. These were vital reflections of the status and power of these important figures who are properly addressed as “Our Right Trusty and Right Well Beloved Cousin”.

THE EARLS OF BRITAIN is a 10-week course to be presented at St. Martin’s Activity Center from Sept. 11-12 through November 20-21, 2018 (there will be a one-week break Oct. 16-17). The course will be presented three times each week – on Tuesday & Wednesday mornings (9:30-11:30 a.m.) and Tuesday evenings (6:30-8:30 p.m.).

The fee for the course is $200 (you may, if you wish, register for either half of the course: Sessions 1-5, or 6-10, for $125 either half).

To register, fill out the attached form and send, with a check in the proper amount to Barry A. Greenlaw, P.0. Box 870, Columbus, Texas 78934.
