Will & Lizzie Go To London
An Elizabethan Tale

Lecturer: Barry A. Greenlaw

This 9 week course is the story of “Will” (William Shakespeare) and “Lizzie” (Queen Elizabeth I) and the City of London, where Shakespeare lived, wrote, and performed. Several of his earliest plays, including A Midsummer’s Night Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, and Richard II, were performed in the two earliest London theaters, whose sites have recently been discovered.
While we will talk about Will, and Lizzie, the real hero of the story will be the city of London itself as a center of Elizabethan culture, and notably the small parish of Great St. Helen’s. Great St. Helen’s was home to some of the most interesting and notorious figures in the late Elizabethan age. Much of this parish survived the Great Fire of 1666 and the Blitz of World War II, and it is where, still today, the pattern of the Elizabethan city is most visible.

Will & Lizzie Go To London will be presented three times each week – on Tuesday & Wednesday mornings (9:30-11:30 a.m.) and Tuesday evenings (6:30-8:30 p.m.), beginning September 7-8. There will be no class the weeks of October 10 and October 17.
The fee for the course is $200. You may, if you wish, register for either half of the course for $125 either half.
To register, fill out the attached form and send, with a check in the proper amount to Barry A. Greenlaw, P.0. Box 870, Columbus, Texas 78934.
