Worship Like It’s 1776
On July 5, Parishioners stepped back in the summer of 1776 to worship as Anglicans did on the first Sunday after the Declaration of Independence was signed. How did congregations worship when the familiar prayers for King George II were crossed out? How did the clergy respond to the sudden political and theological challenges of the Revolutions? And how did the Church continue to celebrate Holy Communion amid uncertainty?
The Rev. Dane Boston explored the liturgical adaptations made by Anglican clergy in the days immediately following Independence, examining how the Book of Common Prayer was altered and highlighting portions of the worship booklet reproduced for the July 5 Sunday service.
